I've personally sailed the Danube, the Rhine, and a three-river Bordeaux itinerary through the Gironde, Dordogne, and Garonne. AmaWaterways is my personal favorite, especially for clients drawn to a wider range of excursion options, bike tours along the river, not just walking tours. Viking is every bit as excellent, and I hold specialist certifications with both lines. Both are wonderful choices, and the right one comes down to your travel style. When Uniworld, Avalon Waterways, Tauck, Scenic, or Emerald is the better fit for a client's style or itinerary, I book those too.
Right itinerary for the right traveler
Danube for classic first-timers. Douro for wine and quieter days. Rhine for castles and fairytale towns. Rhône for food, Provence, and Roman history. I'll steer you to the one that fits.
Pre and post-cruise stays that matter
The city on either end of the sailing often makes or breaks the trip. I plan Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Porto, or Lisbon extensions with hotels and guides I've personally vetted.

Which river should I choose for my first river cruise?

For most first-time river cruisers I recommend the Danube (Budapest to Passau or Vienna and beyond) or the Rhine (Amsterdam to Basel). Both are scenic, port-rich, and easy to combine with a pre or post-cruise stay in a great European city. The Douro in Portugal and the Rhône in France are wonderful too, and they suit clients who already know they enjoy the format.
How is a river cruise different from an ocean cruise?

River cruises are smaller (usually around 150 guests), unpack-once trips where you're in a new town almost every day and off the ship most afternoons. There are no sea days and no formal nights. It's a calmer, more culturally immersive pace, and it works especially well for multi-generational trips and travelers who want depth over breadth.
